Origins
Basketball
Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a physical education teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. He wanted to create a game that could be played indoors during the winter. He hung a peach basket on the wall and used a soccer ball. The goal was to throw the ball into the basket to score points. This was the start of basketball.
Handball
Handball's origins are in ancient games, but modern handball began in the late 19th century. It was developed in Denmark and Germany. The game was first played outdoors with 11 players on each team, and later, it became more popular indoors with seven players per team. The International Handball Federation was founded in 1946.
Volleyball
Volleyball was created in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a physical education director in Massachusetts, USA. He wanted to create a game that combined elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. Originally called "mintonette," the game was played with a net and a ball. It quickly became popular and was later renamed "volleyball" because of the action of volleying the ball over the net.
